DVLA Validation Service

The DVLA Validation Service uses the data supplied by DVLA to 3rd party organisations (such as Experian and Equifax) to return details of the vehicle based on the Vehicle Registration.

The data is supplied across the Internet to our web site in XML format - there can be a slight delay of up to 2 seconds in obtaining a response from our supplier, which in most cases would not be remarked.

The service operates as follows:

  • For clients who have opted to use this service, only the VRM needs to be entered (this applies to Interactive Data entry method where the On Date is defaulted to today - for the Spreadsheet Data entry method or the FTP data entry method the Ondate must also be added).
  • For Interactive users, the data is displayed in a separate window; they can then choose:
    • Either to accept the data that has been captured from DVLA
    • Or to amend the data that has been entered, if there are significant discrepancies or if there is no data there at all
  • For spreadsheet and FTP users, the data is retrieved as the VRM's are populated to the database and the results added to the vehicle records. If no record is found, then an appropriate indicator is set.

To the main MID record, the following data are added:

  • Vehicle Type
  • Make
  • Model
  • Gross Vehicle Weight (if appropriate)
  • Engine Size

The value "Seats" (intended by the MIIC for Bus / Coach vehicles) is not held by DVLA.

To the associated full vehicle information record are added:

  • "Not found" indicator
  • VIN
  • Fuel Type (Petrol, Diesel etc.)
  • CO2 value (mg)
  • Colour, and date of any change
  • Body type
  • Dates of manufacture, registration, change of keeper etc.
  • Whether imported from Northern Ireland or not
  • Insurance class (ABI standard)
  • Number of doors
  • Date scrapped (if any)
  • Date exported (if any)

For newer vehicles, the registration number may not match any DVLA data, as there are delays in updating DVLA for new vehicles. If this occurs, each customer has the option to re-request the update automatically after 6 weeks, at which point the data will then have been added to DVLA.

With this data available, reports will be developed over the next few weeks to provide complementary summaries across Insurers, Brokers or Policyholders of the following:

  • Vehicle fuel type
  • Insurance classes
  • CO2 ratings

The charges for this service are:

£900 to set up for a customer (either at Broker level, Policyholder level or Insurer level), followed by a per-transaction cost of 30p per vehicle (Broker or Policyholder requested) or 25p per vehicle (Insurer requested).
